The Castello Svevo began its life as a Roman fortress, which was than remodeled and upgraded by the conquering Normans. Roman emperor Frederick II used the Norman design as a starting point for his own, preserving two towers. Spanish rulers added the bastions in the 16th century, which hung over the now filled-in moat.
