Brindisi Streets, Avenues & Boulevards
• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide to Streets, Avenues & Boulevards in Brindisi, BR, Apulia.
The great Via Appia and its use for the Roman people was a symbol of the republic and its intent to bring its citizens together. The road, which still exists in parts today, was made of large rocks over a layer of cemented smaller rocks, and was constructed with drainage ditches on either side and dirt paths for pedestrians. The road is said to have reached Brindisi, then called Brundisium, about 250 BC, and was wide enough to allow two chariots to pass. Every so often there would be a way-station to rest and water horses. From Brindisi to Rome the distance was 540 km (336 mi), and took approximately two weeks to travel.
