The tough, 12th-century, Romanesque cathedral in Foggia survived a devastating earthquake in 1731, but many of its precious contents were lost. However, an ancient Byzantine icon, which eventually became the inspiration for Foggia's city symbol, is still preserved in a chapel inside.
