Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo

Built in 600 AD, this is one of Italy's oldest sacred spots. Atop a hill overlooking the sea, the Santuario di San Michele was the last stop for crusaders for hundreds of years before they set off for the Holy Land and other parts unknown. Pilgrims still visit the monastery by the thousands each year, gleaning a taste of the first days of Christianity.
