Lecce Places of Worship & Religious Sites
Lecce's showy basilica is decked out in the best of the city's brand of Baroque, termed barocco leccese. Stones quarried locally lend themselves to carving, as they are unusually malleable but yet heartily retain their shape. The church's facade was decorated from the 16th to 17th centuries, and its upper levels are adorned with so many statues, figurines and curlicues its difficult to take in all at once. Each look finds a different fanciful delight.
